Fun Facts About the Palm Springs Visitors Center
Iconic Architecture: The building was originally designed by the renowned architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers in 1965. It was initially a gas station before being repurposed as the Visitors Center.
The design is a prime example of mid-century modern architecture, a style for which Palm Springs is famous. Its unique, futuristic canopy is a standout feature.
It’s the first impression of Palm Springs for many: The center is located at the northern entrance to Palm Springs on Highway 111, making it the perfect first stop as you enter the city. It’s also on the way to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
It was almost destroyed: Before becoming the Visitors Center, the building was slated for demolition. The community's efforts saved it, and it was transformed into its current use, preserving an important piece of Palm Springs' architectural history.
It’s here to stay: In 2015, the Palm Springs Visitors Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
